For supermarkets and essential businesses in the Caribbean, electricity is more than convenience. It is the backbone of daily operations. Refrigeration, lighting, point-of-sale systems, and customer comfort all depend on reliable power. Yet hurricanes, salt exposure, and grid instability make traditional energy supply unpredictable.
This is where off grid solar power systems prove their value.
Namkoo recently completed a 60kW/120kWh off-grid solar power system for a supermarket in the Caribbean. When Hurricane Melissa struck, the grid failed. The solar system did not. It continued supplying stable electricity, protecting food inventory and allowing the supermarket to operate when power was needed most.
Namkoo designed and delivered a robust solar battery storage system tailored for Caribbean conditions.
• Solar capacity: 60kW photovoltaic array
• Battery storage: 120kWh lithium energy storage
• Application: Off-grid backup and daily operation for a supermarket
• Operating mode: Fully off-grid during grid outages
This off grid solar kit was engineered to provide immediate backup power and long-duration energy support.
Island nations face unique energy challenges. Electricity prices are high, grids are vulnerable to extreme weather, and fuel supply disruptions are common after storms.
A complete off grid solar system solves these issues by:
• Reducing dependence on unstable grid power
• Providing uninterrupted electricity during outages
• Lowering long-term operating costs
• Enhancing business resilience during hurricanes
For supermarkets, uninterrupted power means refrigerated goods remain safe and financial losses are minimized.
The photovoltaic mounting structure was specially reinforced to withstand hurricane-force winds and salt-laden air. Corrosion-resistant materials were selected to ensure long-term durability in coastal environments.
The inverter system features seamless switching capability. When the grid fails, the system instantly transfers to battery power without interruption. This ensures refrigerators, freezers, and essential systems continue operating smoothly.
This fast response is critical in preventing food spoilage and equipment damage during sudden outages.
When Hurricane Melissa impacted the region, widespread grid outages followed. Despite these conditions:
• The supermarket remained fully powered
• Refrigeration systems stayed operational
• No inventory loss occurred due to power failure
The solar battery storage system delivered stable electricity throughout the outage, proving the value of proper system design and local expertise.
A key factor in this project’s success was Namkoo’s local installation and technical teams. The system was customized specifically for Caribbean weather risks and local grid conditions.
After the hurricane passed, Namkoo’s technical team conducted a site visit for inspection and preventive maintenance. All components were operating normally, and system performance met design expectations.
The client expressed high satisfaction with both the product quality and the professional after-sales service.
